PREMATURE EJACULATION (PE)

WHAT IS PE?

Also know as rapid or early ejaculation or climax, PE occurs when a man ejaculates sooner during the sexual intercourse than he or his partner would desire. Like ED, PE is a very common sexual complaint reported by men. If PE happens infrequently or if it does not cause distress in the man and his partner it may not be a cause of concern.

However, a man may be diagnosed with Premature Ejaculation Disorder if he ejaculates within one minute of penetration always or almost always, is unable to delay ejaculation during intercourse all the time or nearly all the time, and feels frustrated, distressed and avoids sexual intimacy as a result.

Anxiety, avoidance, relational difficulties stemming from unsatisfactory sex life, feelings of guilt and shame are often experienced by men with PE and their partners.

CAUSES OF PE

Though the exact causes of PE are unknown, it has been determined that premature ejaculation involves a complex interaction of psychological (e.g., anxiety, stress, depression, feeling of guilt about sex) and biological (e.g., low levels of serotonin) factors.

Sometimes too PE can be a problem for men with Erectile Dysfunction. Men who are worried they could lose their erection may develop a pattern of rushing to ejaculate. It can be a hard habit to break.

TREATMENT OF PE

Like ED, PE is easily treatable with well-proven mind and body interventions. Sex therapy and couples counseling are effective treatment methods for PE. If PE was caused originally by ED, treating ED will often make PE “go away."
