DELAYED EJACULATION (DE)

WHAT IS DE?

Delayed ejaculation is a condition in which it takes an extended period (e.g., 30 minutes or more) of sexual stimulation for men to reach sexual climax and ejaculate. In some cases, men with DE are unable to ejaculate at all.

It's not uncommon for men to have delayed ejaculation from occasionally due to temporary factors (e.g., stress). DE becomes a problem if it's ongoing or causes distress or frustration, or if it stops sexual activity due to fatigue, physical irritation, loss of erection or a request from your partner.

Chronic DE is less common than other sexual dysfunctions in men. There are a few types of DE based on its onset and duration (i.e., when it shows up in a man’s life).

CAUSES OF DE

Like with ED and PE, the causes of DE vary. It can result from medications (e.g., antidepressants, opioids), substance misuse, certain chronic health conditions, surgeries, injuries, mental health concerns (i.e., depression, anxiety, stress). In many cases, it is due to a combination of physical and psychological concerns.

TREATMENT OF DE

Thorough assessment of the underlying issues is crucial in choosing the most effective treatment interventions. Treatment of DE may include one or more of the following: taking a medication or making changes to medications you currently take, sex therapy or addressing changes in lifestyle habits (e.g., alcohol or drug use), resolving relational difficulties or addressing individual psychological conflicts.

REMEMBER

If you are currently struggling with DE and you are in a relationship, participating in sex therapy with your partner and working together as a team to address this problem is most successful.
